Fashion rocks! [Shows]

As Lakme Fashion Week unveiled its designers and fashion in Mumbai, I was witness to the New York Fashion Week fuelled by excitement and drama.

The fashion night out was a manifestation of ‘Fashion Rocks’. New York celebrated fashion in a way that had people thronging the streets, holding glasses of champagne and party hopping from store to store. New York came alive on that chilly night despite the cool drizzle and no cabs! We started at Henri Bendel where I got to chat with Dr Brandt about skin care who raved about his own flawless skin.

Our next stop was Roberto Cavalli, who as usual stood outside welcoming his personal guests. The DJ rocked the party as I swooned over his swooshing drapes on display. The Emmanuel Ungaro party was packed with celebrities. LuAnne de Lesseps, the Real Housewives of New York star who wore the seasonal purple colour with the sensual ruffles, hogged the limelight after Lindsay Lohan made her exit.

This child protge who revisits scandal again and again wore a striking white taffeta dress and has just been signed up as the new Ungaro girl. The champagne made me warmer as we walked towards Valentino and then J Mendel (fabulous fur) passing an attractive show window with a nude model laden with big luxe pearls piled with heavy metal chains, swarovskis and studs that made a rock and roll statement. Ah! The revival of the 80’s.

The buzz at the New York Fashion Week was palpable

Pupils spell it out

Huddersfield Daily Examiner (Huddersfield, England), May 30, 2009

YOUNGSTERS at Shepley First School were treated to the excitement of a helicopter landing in the school grounds.

Pupils were treated to a special flight-related outdoor assembly.

Each class then gathered to be photographed from the sky, forming the word ‘Hello’.

Aerial photography company, Heli-Wise, also photographed the Firth Street school from various angles to create a 16-page souvenir book for parents..

In case anyone was wondering, yes, it is finally autumn. Rich Cordes of Pleasant Hill sent in some beautiful fall photos of his backyard Japanese maple, which certainly puts us in the right seasonal frame of mind. Do you have something special to share? Send it along with any details to the Times, Home & Garden, P.O. Box 8099, Walnut Creek, CA 94596-8099, or e-mail JPGs to jmorris@bayareanewsgroup.com. Sorry, we can’t return pictures

Restaurant re-fit leaves a sour taste

0 Comments | Daily Post; Liverpool (UK), Nov 20, 2009 | by BEN SCHOFIELD

CELEBRITY chef Marco Pierre White sparked anger after one of his new restaurants cancelled bookings.

Marco is putting his name to three restaurants around the region, including the Swan Inn at Aughton.

But, because he and his team have ordered a re-fit, parties over Christmas are being scrapped or moved.

Among them was a surprise 50th birthday party organised since April by Ormskirk mother-of-two Ali Dower.

Mrs Dower, 48, said: “I was just in shock to begin with.

“I didn’t believe it until I read it in the paper that Marco’s coming.”

Mrs Dower was holding the party for her fianc Steve Shuttleworth.

She put down a hefty pounds 250 deposit to secure the booking and was looking forward to the party, which was due to go ahead next Saturday.

S

Mrs Dower said: “I paid for the function room in May and reserved all 13 bedrooms.

“Then the assistant manager Steve rang up and said they had to cancel all their functions.”

Mrs Dower was told to get in touch with Briars Hall hotel in Lathom.

They luckily had space and have managed to fit the party in at short notice.

Mrs Dower said: “They have given me the deposit back but no offer of compensation.

“I did ask about compensation, but all they said was that there’s no offer.

“But now it’s all organised at Briars Hall, I probably wouldn’t go down that route.

“If that hadn’t been available, I’m not sure what I would have done.”

Marco’s three restaurants are owned by Sanguine Hospitality

FTC targets blog product reviews

0 Comments | Deseret News (Salt Lake City), Oct 6, 2009 | by Deborah Yao

The Federal Trade Commission on Monday took steps to make product information and online reviews more accurate for consumers, regulating blogging for the first time and mandating that testimonials reflect typical results.

The FTC will require that writers on the Web clearly disclose any freebies or payments they get from companies for reviewing their products. The commission also said advertisers featuring testimonials that claim dramatic results cannot hide behind disclaimers that the results aren’t typical.

The FTC said its commissioners voted 4-0 to approve the final guidelines, which had been expected. The guides are not binding law but rather interpretations of law that hope to help advertisers comply with regulations. Violating the rules, which take effect Dec. 1, could result in various sanctions including a lawsuit.

Testimonials have to spell out what consumers should expect to experience with their products. Previously, companies had just included disclaimers when results were out of the ordinary — such as a large weight loss — noting that the experience was not typical for all customers.

Testimonial advertisements can be effective for consumers since they show others talking about their experiences, giving hope to the consumer that they’ll have that experience too. But they are misleading to consumers if they don’t disclose what they should truly expect to experience, the commission said.

For bloggers, the FTC stopped short of specifying how they must disclose conflicts of interest. Rich Cleland, assistant director of the FTC’s advertising practices division, said the disclosure must be “clear and conspicuous,” no matter what form it will take.

Bloggers have long praised or panned products and services online. But what some consumers might not know is that many companies pay reviewers for their write-ups or give them free products such as toys or computers or trips to Disneyland. In contrast, at traditional journalism outlets, products borrowed for reviews generally have to be returned.

Before the FTC gave notice last November it was going to regulate such endorsements, blogs varied in the level of disclosures about these potential conflicts of interest.

The FTC’s proposal made many bloggers anxious. They said the scrutiny would make them nervous about posting even innocent comments.

To placate such fears, Cleland said the FTC will more likely go after an advertiser instead of a blogger for violations

The comeback begins

The comeback begins

National Review, Nov 23, 2009

CONSERVATIVES scored some impressive victories on Election Day. In Virginia, Robert McDonnell won the governor’s race in a landslide that carried other conservative statewide officeholders and legislative candidates to victory. New Jersey’s Chris Christie won his race by a larger margin than any Republican had mustered since 1985–and as a candidate significantly to the right of previous Republican governors such as Tom Kean and Christie Todd Whitman. Maine repealed a law that accorded official recognition to same-sex unions as though they were marriages.

The disappointment of the evening came in a special election for Congress in upstate New York, where Conservative-party nominee Doug Hoffman narrowly lost to Democrat Bill Owens. Local GOP party officials bollixed the race from the beginning by picking liberal Dede Scozzafava. With her campaign sinking beneath the waves, she pulled out the weekend before the election and then capped her disastrous foray by endorsing Owens. Hoffman was a much better candidate, and demonstrated the passion that is animating the conservative grassroots on fiscal issues

Visa, a payments technology company, announced the opening of a new data processing center in North America.

Concurrently, Visa implemented several IT enhancements, chief among them the implementation of a new operating system that underpins VisaNet, its transaction processing network.

– Greater reliability, capacity – The opening of the new center is a key milestone in Visa’s multi-year technology upgrade, that results in Visa now having two synchronized, secure and reliable data centers in North America, each capable of carrying Visa’s entire payments volume in the event of a natural disaster or systems outage.

– New operating system – Developed in partnership with IBM, the system, known as z Transaction Processing Facility (z/TPF), is a 64- bit operating system that allows more information to be manipulated at once and perform more complex processing functions in milliseconds. Importantly, the company noted that this paves the way for Visa to deliver new, information-intensive applications such as advanced fraud garmin nuvi 255w analysis, and mobile payments and services.

– Enhanced security – This centralized processing structure, combined with the new operating system, provides Visa with a comprehensive view into the payment system, leading to high levels of intelligence around spending patterns, enabling Visa to provide a broad range of information-based services, and improving the company’s ability to detect and prevent fraud in near real-time.

“Visa’s commitment to continuous technology upgrades differentiates us from competitors and helps Visa play a key role in facilitating the migration to electronic payments. Few people recognize the critical role VisaNet plays in supporting our extensive brand acceptance, securing our products and facilitating payment innovation,” said Mike Dreyer, Chief Information Officer, Visa

Mike The Pike Productions, Inc. Announces Pre-Production for Low-Budget Feature

Mike The Pike Productions, Inc. Announces Pre-Production for Low-Budget Feature

Market Wire, November, 2009

Mike The Pike Productions, Inc. (PINKSHEETS: MIKP) has finalized conversations with newcomer Cam Clark to produce his
screenplay, ‘Horse,’ a Crime-Thriller to be shot in Fort Wayne, Indiana,
about a handful of the city’s seediest underground players vying for a
misplaced bag of heroin, all for their own reasons; all at a deadly cost.

“The screenplay has a well-crafted plot structure and interesting
characters, each with their own story. It’s very unique, but if we had to
compare it to anything, it would fit well within the Guy Ritchie/Quentin
Tarantino sector of the genre,” says MTP CEO Mark B. Newbauer, who will
make his directorial debut on the film, slated for principal photography in
Jan/Feb 2010. “We get several screenplay submissions and this one was a
diamond in the rough, for certain. ‘Horse’ is a winner, and so is its
Screenwriter, Cam Clark, who has truly impressed me with his ability to
craft an overall entertaining script that I feel we’ll bring to the screen
together with solid potential for critical and financial success.”

Clark, a Junior at Southside High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana, is
certainly an “old soul in a high school kid’s body,” comments Newbauer. “He
has a genuine passion with a strong background in theater and extensive
experience in Shakespeare, Twain, Mamet and everything between. I’m truly
amazed that this story nature photography came from a Junior in High School as, in my previous
career with a reputable, bi-coastal talent agency, I provided coverage on
literally dozens of scripts, month after month for their literary division;
you get a feel for what works, what doesn’t and, ultimately, what gets
picked up as a marketable product. A script like ‘Horse’ is one in
hundreds by far and I’m pleased to have been introduced to Cam by a mutual
friend.”

Newbauer and Clark will be producing the project together under the Mike
The Pike Productions banner, which will serve as the project’s Executive
Producer. MTP will receive the majority of net proceeds generated from the
film, with the remainder going to Clark and, in line with MTP’s ‘pay it
forward’ concept, a portion going to a charitable entity.

The film’s initial budget, which has already been secured, will remain
closely held at this point in time to allow the company to maintain
leverage when it comes time to sell or distribute the film, however
Newbauer ensures that “it will carry an impressive production value as
we’ll be using (already secured) locations and scenes featuring a baseball
stadium, a private jet, hangar, pyrotechnics, upscale nightclubs, retail
stores and city police officers serving as consultants on the film, along
with a name or two to support the cast.

Newbauer continues, “We’re optimistic to say the least
